HY Photo comp!

Have you ever wanted to take over the HY for a night? Well read on…

Do you take photo’s? No need to be a professional, but we need some high res pics of our new venue, and have decided to run a competiton and dangle a carrot. Come to HY this weekend, grab some pic’s and email them to happyyessmanager@gmail.com by 6pm Sunday (June 21st) to be in the running. If your photo(s) are selected for use in the Darwin Festival program guide, you will win the opportunity to:

Program Happy Yess for a night (pick two of your fave bands) and also supply the house music (either from i-Pod or cd’s) for the entire evening.

Pretty cool, eh? Obviously, this is a cunning way of outsourcing both the jobs of taking the photo ourselves, and my job of booking bands for a night, but hey, what are you gonna do about it?… Yeah, that’s what I thought…

Well, get snapping, and email those entries in this weekend!

29/4/10

Hi y’all,
As you may know we have been in talks with Brownsmart to secure our new venue – in the past we have been looking at a May 1st opening… This has been waylaid.
We are looking to be in there by the end of the month, but we are just ironing out the fine details of our agreement to ensure that both parties are happy and the partnership will be fruitful for the NT local music scene…
Watch this space, and see you at our humble Bennett Street abode for the meantime!
much love
Dave

Could this be the new Happy Yess? If only it wasn’t a department store in Birmingham, maybe.

Moses quit because their bass player left town to go to uni. We’re very sad but… who knows, maybe something will come and take their place in our hearts. Let’s hope so or life just won’t be worth living.

Bands and artists check out the program pages and if you see gaps, that’s because that night is probably free and you can email us and we’ll probably give you a show admin@happyyess.com.

Highlights for March include CD launches by Semishigure and The Aviators, as well as a Melbourne band called Skipping Girl Vinegar who seem cool www.skippinggirlvinegar.com.

Also electronic music gets a well-deserved showing on 20th with BASS CONCUSSION.

April is looking good to… so stay tuned! And all those amazing bands out there that we don’t know about yet, get in touch.

So Mark Hilton has a new CD and Megan Spencer made a video clip for one of the songs and so I thought I’d link it. Check it out (below).

23/11/08

End of the Year

There are only three more weekends left for the year at Happy Yess, so get there before life gets very boring. Our last night will be 13th December and we open again on 29th Jan 2009.

Fundraiser

Thanks to everyone who came along on 14th November for the fundraiser for Sunflower Orphan Centre in Cambodia. $1234.15 was raised. And thanks for the great bands for playing for free!

07/08/08

Off the Record

This show looked so fantastic and involved a wide range of community members. Thanks to Aly de Groot for organising the whole thing in conjunction with the Darwin Fringe Festival, and for donating some of the proceeds to Happy Yess. If you bought an artwork or made one that didn’t sell, please drop in to Happy Yess during opening hours (Thurs from 8pm, Fri/Sat from 9pm) to collect your work. The records are in a couple of milk crates under the bar.

Blow-ins

Watch the calendar over the next couple of months for a host of interesting interstate bands. We try to team them up with local bands – good for networking and exposure.

Rocket – 23 August at Brown’s Mart

Don’t come to Happy Yess on 23 August! Go to Brown’s Mart, where we are putting on a big lineup of local acts in conjunction with Music NT. It will be a great night. See the program page for details.

14/07/08

Plagarism

The Darwin Festival Program has ripped off artist descriptions that I wrote for this website! And I haven’t seen a cent! Oh well, it’s good to know that Happy Yess is once again leading the way when it comes to original music in this town.

Fascination Street

If any bands want to work up a couple of 80′s covers for our tribute night on 26th July, just let me know. So far we have the Bloody Marys, Country Town Collective and Moses all working on their favourite 80′s tunes from the Smiths, Joy Division and the like.

06/07/08

Membership

All members please email us if you change your contact details. Email addresses are especially important as this we primarily communicate via email. If you haven’t received an email from us since you joined, let us know because it means we can’t read your handwriting.

18/06/08

Art

The stencil workshop run by Zeb Dudgeon as part of Youth Week was a raging success, with about 20 participants of all ages producing fantastic work that is now on the walls of Happy Yess. The main wall (above) was created by Zeb D. and Kai. If you haven’t seen it in the flesh yet, you should. It’s amazing.

Website

The website hasn’t been totally up to date lately – a few technical hassles – but thanks to volunteer Dave E., we are back on track.

Volunteers

Speaking of volunteers, we have a bunch of them and they are so great! From venue and P.A. maintenance, fridge carrying, tech support, flyer printing… Happy Yess basically could not function without them. Thanks!

Youth Week

It was a great success. Let’s do it again next year! We’re currently working on getting more funding so that we can have plenty more all-ages gigs. We are currently getting together a program of youth mentorships and workshops based around the music industry. Stay tuned!

Gigs

We have had some huge gigs in the last couple of months. CD launches by Burrfoot and Cooperblack were extremely successful, and Finn’s poetry + hip hop gig in May was a great success. I didn’t know that poetry was SO BIG in Darwin!

New CD’s

Check our merchandise stand at the bar for fantastic new CD’s from Test Theory and Cooperblack. The Burrfoot one sold out completely at the launch, but hopefully they’ll do another run very soon.

25/03/08

New Door

Thanks to Liam, Oliver and Amy for fixing up the door. It looks gorgeous and serves as a memory to absent friends.

Starlight Lounge

This Thursday Starlight Lounge kicks of again under the enthusiastic guidance of Ms Kelly Lee Hickey. Alymental (which is Aly from Elemental plus special guests) head up a bunch of performers and musicians for a weird and wonderful night of entertainment.

Youth Week

This Sunday 30th 2-6 we are running a stencil workshop with the amazing Zeb Dudgeon. Learn how to make a two layer stencil and then put it up on the walls for the Youth Week art opening on 10th April. It’s the first of our youth week activities – everyone welcome.

The theme of Youth Week at Happy Yess is ‘all-ages, all weekend’. So that’s April 10-13. There will be no alcohol served that weekend. And all-ages means ALL AGES, not just underage, so everyone is welcome to come along. It’s going to  be a great weekend. Check the program for details.

Fridge Benefit

We are holding a benefit at the Deckchair Cinema on 1st May – showing Control and selling food and stuff. Put it in your diary, and email us if you feel that you could help out on the night. We really need that fridge.

24/02/08

Happy Times

Although we miss our adventuring friends (above), it’s been a great month so far at Happy Yess. The interactive art opening was a great success and will be repeated by popular demand on Thursday 6th March so come along and be inspired by some great local music and create some art. Everything on the walls at the moment was made in-situ to the heavenly sounds of Moses, and all works will be auctioned on 6th March.

Fresh Blood

There are a lot of new faces at Happy Yess, both on and off stage and on both sides of the bar. Please be friendly and patient with our trainees – they’re learning!

Fridge

Some guys in outfits took our fridge away and we’re desperately in need of another! Anyone with access to a free or cheap commercial drinks fridge, please get in touch! But don’t worry we have some big eskies and the drinks are still deliciously frosty.

Special Sunday gig 2nd March 4-8pm

Old Darwin favourites Stretch ‘n’ the Truth are heading north for a laidback Sunday arvo gig with some special guests and suprises. Bring your friends and come hang out. The bar will be open so no kids please.

13/02/08

Opportunities for Artists

We’re always looking for new talent to play at Happy Yess, but in particular coming up we need all kinds of musicians and performers for Starlight Lounge on 21st Feb. This is an intimate cabaret-type night where anything goes! Hosted by the inimitable Steve Holliday, Karlheins from Test Theory will be doing a solo piano set and Nira Quin and friends will be performing as well, but the more the merrier! So email me if you’re interested in performing – zeb_olsen@yahoo.com.au

Also we need artists to perform at Tropical Ear II on 23rd Feb. As a follow up to the successful Tropical Ear last year, it’s a chance for Darwin artists to show respect for their fellows by performing cover versions of other Darwin artists’ songs! So far Starlight Motel will be doing Purple Skies by the Aviators and Triangle by Elemental, David Garnham is covering hits by Cooperblack, Leah Flanagan and Roy Mackonkey (!) and heaven knows what the Aviators and Leah have up their sleeves! So be part of it: learn a couple of songs, and give me a call.

15/01/08

New Year
Only 23 sleeps until Happy Yess opens for 2008. The new calendar for February will be up very soon so stay tuned.

23/12/07

Happy Yess is Having a Sleep

We all need to have a rest sometime so the venue will be out of action until February, but I’m getting together a great program for February, starting on the 7th with the year’s first art opening/happening. Then get ready for month of music with some of our amazing local bands, DJ’s and commedians, a metal night, karaoke, Starlight Lounge cabaret and some special events including The Aviators’ CD launch and Tropical Ear II. Stay tuned for the full program in early January and if you want to be part of the action don’t hesitate to contact me, Zeb, the Manager. Happy Xmas.

7/11/07

Happy Yess Xmas Party

Come along and catch up with all your Happy Yess friends on Sunday 16th December. Members and friends welcome – and if you’re not a member that’s okay – join up on the day for only $5.00. Kids welcome.

2/12/07

End of Year

Only six more shows to go! (and one party). Check the program. The Hearts Blast Graves CD launch was one of those special Happy Yess events that felt unique and important. The stage was so pretty, the musicians were so fantastic, the crowd was so attentive! It was an amazing celebration of the creativity that stems from (and keeps coming back to) our town.

Survey

Got something to say about Happy Yess? Fill in a survey form this weekend at the bar. It helps us to know what you think as an audience member or musician or both.

30/11/07

Happy Yess Myspace

Our myspace page, which was set up and is run by volunteers, is under new management. Check it out. Thanks to volunteers past and present who have put time into this!

25/11/07

New Era, New Forum, New Year

Hey everyone – welcome to a Happy new era! Congrats to Deb for doing so well!
Our underground team of experts has been working hard on setting up a new Forum for Happy Yess. Please try out http://yess.hyperkinetic.net/ and let us know what you think of the venue, review the last show you went to, or make suggestions for events you would like to see in 2008.

Speaking of 2008, please note that we will be closed 16 Dec 2007 to 7 Feb 2008. I just bought the new diary for Happy Yess bookings and got very excited about all the blank pages that I am going to fill with the most amazing bands and events. Look forward to about 144 great nights at Happy Yess. That’s about 288 bands, not to mention art, comedy, karaoke…! But make sure you come down to Happy Yess before the end of the year because there’s heaps of great stuff coming up (see program page).

23/11/07

New Photos

I know there hasn’t been an update on here for a while, but I’m flat out just getting the weekends to happen at Happy Yess, and it’s the website that suffers. However, Ruben Maher has offered to put in some volunteer time on the website and so it should be updated a bit more regularly. I was recently emailed some photos of Enth Degree and Crimson Ice playing on 16th November by Fiona Steel so I put them up on the photos page. Check them out. If anyone has any photos or reviews that they would like to go on the website, just email them to me at zeb_olsen@yahoo.com.au and I’ll get them up. Over the boring old wet season, while the venue is closed (16th December to 7th February 2008 – boo hoo) I will be working on the website to revitalise it. I think it’s really important to collate and document what goes on at Happy Yess, because it’s pretty bloody amazing, and then one day we’ll do a book! So after you’ve seen a show, go home and drop me a quick email about it, that way everyone is getting a say about the venue. There’s also a new forum in the works, which I’ll let you know about very soon. Did you know that at committee management meetings we discuss ‘feedback from artists and punters’? We really are interested in how you feel about Happy Yess.

11/09/07

New Manager

For anyone who hasn’t worked it out yet, I am the new Manager of Happy Yess. My name is Zeb. You can contact me at zeb_olsen@yahoo.com.au. Kris will of course still be very much a part of Happy Yess, and you’ll see him at the venue most nights doing the sound engineer job, but don’t call him – bother me instead.

Booking for November

October is pretty much locked down (although I am looking for an MC and some cabaret acts for a gig on 4th – poets, commedians, performers and solo musicians/small acts please apply). But November is pretty free. If you’re keen for a gig, let me know.

Velvet Underground Tribute Night

I’m also looking for bands/musicians who would like to do a couple of Velvets songs for the tribute night on 27th Oct. These nights are always great fun and it’s amazing to see some of our well-known locals leave their comfort zone and do something suprising.

September Poster

Isn’t it gorgeous? Thanks to Kylie Smith (drummer in Elemental and Starlight Motel) for volunteering her time and artistic skills to make September so special.

Bored, then make me famous!

Too busy organising gigs, so make blastcorp famous by going here and downloading a song or two.

Gung Hei Fat Choy!

We got official word this week that Happy Yess will be demolished to build 13 stories of high rise apartments. Nice….

Still no confirmation on the timeframe though. So, its business as usual.
Anyway, we’ve got a petition here which you can download, print, sign and bring back to Happy Yess. If you are not up to that just come sign it the next time you are at the venue. It says the following:

The Happy Yess venue in Bennett Street is due to be demolished shortly to make way for a high rise development. We, the undersigned, ask the Martin Government to support Happy Yess Community Arts Incorporated by providing a space in the CBD for the continued enjoyment of local, original music.

Yes, it was lots of fun. Thanks everyone for coming!

There was an article in Saturdays NT News regarding the building of a 13 story building where Happy Yess is situated, which said they expect to start construction late this year….will keep you posted.

Good news:

1)Happy Yess reopens on feb 9 with Diplo.

2)We’ve chilled out over christmas/had beautiful babies

3)ArtsNT has decided to give this little old non-profit venue $15000 to keep up the good work!

Bad News:

1) There’s development sign on Happy Yess to demolish it and build a 13 story apartment block…

Keep your eyes peeled for a new venue, and let us know! This shouldn’t happen till much later in the year though…

20/11/06

well, its been a big year. so to celebrate we are going to put on a few more big, shiny shows and then have a rest for christmas time. album launches abound. blastcorp’s vinyl picturedisc album is launched on friday dec 8th, and horse trank bring out their new CD with a launch at happy yess on sat dec 2.

happy yess will close for the year on saturday dec 9th. plans to reopen mid january 2007. stay tuned!

12/9/06

Two things….the happy yess cd shop is open at the bar and shifting product. So if you have discs or merch and even dvd’s to off load, get them to justin asap. And to all the punters, here is the fact: this is the best place to get local original music at bargain basement prices! OK, and the other thing is, the reno pics are posted in the photo section of the site, so get in there and check the people power going on in the first week. bye

23/8/06

New stuff report!

We got a new fridge. It keeps heaps of drinks really cold!

We got a new mixing desk. It keeps the sound from randomly dropping out!

We got new horns in the foldback. They stop the foldback sounding like its under 3 sleeping bags!

18/7/06

There are some great new pics on the photo page thanks to the fantastic Lari Gadza. Go check them out. There will also be a load of photos from the reno working B up soon so be sure to come back every now and then. Should also say a big thanks to the army of people who came to the club on those days… well done, we did a great job on that sandwich shop!!

18/7/06

Attention all local bands with CD’s to sell. We are in the process of creating the Happy Yess CD shop. The idea is you give us some stock and we sell it for you from behind the bar. If you’re interested give Justin a call on 0409285947. There will be a %10 comish for the club.

14/6/06

Things are starting to settle down. A great weekend with local and interstate acts in the form of Combat Wombat, Dave Flower, Matt Ryder, Leeroy and France is Burning. Punters may have noticed some technical problems on the saturday night, this is a hand me down PA with bits and pieces kicked in from all over the place and can only really be described as dub sound system. Justin and Kris took their expertise to the task and have come up trumps. This tempremental beast has been tamed once again! If anyone has PA scraps cluttering their lives and wants to donate, get in touch. Bose 802 spare parts much wanted.

6/6/06

Well the opening weekend went off with two nights of entertainment. This thing is actually working! The first program is nearly finished, and there are some photos up on the site. Hope to see you down there this weekend if you missed last… We must send a huge thankyou to all the people who helped clean the up the joint, you rule!

24/5/06

Working B this weekend. The realo has let us down with more hidden charges and only 1 weeks grace on rent to get the joint cleand up. Get your paint shirt on and bring a roller down this weekend…we open next weekend!!

3/5/06

Thanks to the people who supported this idea by signing the partition or sent a letter. The appeal has been successful! Who would have thought! The Happy Yess project team is stunned and thrilled with the result. As soon as we sign a lease we can start to clean the place up and get gigs going. Yess!

24/2/06

After getting approval from the fire dept., the police, Darwin City Council, residents and surrounding businesses the commission has rejected the application to sell grog. This is a huge set back for the venue and if the appeal goes badly…. This could be goodnight.

6/12/05

O.K. the latest is that the fire dept. knocked us back for building classification. This looks like it may be a miscommunication or a mistake. The building certifier has come back with “should be O.K.” We all hold our breath…. the police report next, then… sign a lease.

This new information coming to light puts on track for a mid Jan opening party!

See you there.

12/10/05

Got a plan for a new music venue in town, going to Music NT to run it by them and see if they want to help. Found a little empty cafe on Bennett St in the city where it could be…
